1. Give students 10 minutes to read through their essays, notes, etc.

2. Turn and talk: What I'm writing about and how it's going for me.

3. Show students how to write conclusion.

5. Thirty minutes to work.

6. Whole class revision (see back of handwritten notes I gave you)

Day 54: Periods 2 & 6 Monday, 5/19 AND Periods 1, 4, & 5 Tuesday, 5/20

E/LA 9.W1 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, style (e.g., tone and voice) are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

Today's Plan:

1. Review your passage and annotations.
2. Write introduction: Give background information about your character, conflict, or the setting and then present your thematic statement.
3. Explain how your passage reveals the setting, character, or conflict. You might need to paraphrase part of your passage. You should include a Quote Sandwich, properly cited. 
4. Explain how your passage reveals your theme. You might need to paraphrase part of your passage. You should include a Quote Sandwich, properly cited. 
5. Relate your theme and your passage to the theme "Coming of Age."

Day 53: Periods 1, 2, 5, & 6 Friday, 5/16 AND Period 4 Monday, 5/19

Objective:
E/LA 9.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details;

E/LA 9.8 Introduce a topic; organize complex ideas, concepts, and Information to make important connections and distinctions; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., figures, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.

Day 52: Periods 2 & 6 Wednesday, 5/14 AND Periods 1, 4, & 5 Thursday, 5/15

Objective: E/LA 9.7 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and Information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.


Today's Plan
1. Read aloud Chapter 31

2. Chapter titles jigsaw

3. Project themes... discuss the themes and how some will connect to setting, characters, and conflict

4. Review EA 2 in SB, pages 405-408

5. Students turn and talk about their understanding of the writing project.

6. Ask students to ask their questions for the whole class to hear (not sit and wait and then say, "What are we doing?" or "I don't know what we're doing").

7. Turn to The Message graphic organizer in spiral.

8. Give students time to look at their notes and decide on a theme + setting/character/conflict they want to work with for EA 2.

9. Give students time to select their passages. Students may choose either one longer passage or a few passages ("pulling it together").

10. Students write out their passage or passages, citing correctly.

Day 51: Periods 1,2, 5, & 6 Tuesday, 5/13 AND Period 4 Wednesday, 5/14

Objective: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Today's Plan:

1. Collect quotes + discussion questions

2. Rearrange the desks into four columns, two rows of desks facing into each other. TKaM discussion speed dating.
