Reading Strategies

Our Romeo and Juliet Reading Strategies

1.    Recall your prior knowledge

2.    Make a prediction: Think about what the text might be about

3.    Figure out the meaning of words you need to know

a.     Look at word parts

b.    Sometimes context will help

c.      Many times, you just have to look the word up (phones are great for this!)

4.    Reread: Do a “Close Reading” of the text:

a.     Summarize what you read

b.    Read aloud with a partner

c.      Annotate the text:

                                                             i.      Highlight key lines of text

ii.      Paraphrase: Write text in your own words

                                                       iii.      Ask questions

                                                        iv.      Make comments

5.    Talk about the reading.

6. Visualize what you are reading: Remember, if you don't have a movie playing in your mind while you are reading, you're not really reading.
