1. Recall your prior knowledge
2. Make a prediction: Think about what the text
might be about
3. Figure out
the meaning of words you need to

a. Look at word

c. Many times,
you just have to look the word up (phones are great for this!)
4. Reread: Do a
“Close Reading” of the text:
a. Summarize
what you read
b. Read aloud
with a partner
c. Annotate the
text:

Highlight key lines of text

Paraphrase: Write text in your own words

Ask questions

Make comments
5. Talk about the reading.
6. Visualize what you are reading: Remember, if you don't have a movie playing in your mind while you are reading, you're not really reading.
